Las agujas no sostienen tinta, asi que el proceso incluye sumergir las agujas en pigmentos de colores tantas veces como haga falta para colorear lo que ya ha sido contorneado.En busca de evitar cualquier transmision de enfermedades a traves de las agujas, los tatuadores hoy en dia usan la maquina llamada "autoclave" para esterilizar las agujas. El autoclave luce como una pequeña caja de seguridad. Aunque lo mas seguro son las agujas desechables. Aunque tambien deben ser desechables los tinteros, las rasuradoras y los guantes de cada estudio.
